Experiencing Interruptions?

Masinga The Calling

African-born, UK-based Interpol inspector Masinga is dispatched to Southern Africa to repatriate a group of Ukrainian teenagers. Sex trafficked by a Russian underworld figure operating in Maputo, Southern Africa. While rescuing these teenagers Masinga encounters Xia, a young Asian influencer whose stance against her country's plundering of Africa's minerals and wildlife make her a prized sacrifice for the nefarious pursuits of the antagonist Jeremiah Mills. Jeremiah believes her ascending spirit will empower his control over an Asian consortium bidding on the purchase of the Mangala Rare Earth Mine from corrupted government officials in Maputo.

Masinga - The Calling boasts an electrifying ensemble of South African talent, led by the remarkable HAKEEM KAE KAZIM in the titular role of Masinga. Widely recognized for his standout performance as George Rutugunda in the Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda, Hakeem's international acclaim paved the way for prominent roles in projects like Librarian 2 opposite Noah Wyle, The Triangle alongside Eric Stoltz and Sam Neill, Pirates of the Caribbean III, Lost, and Cane with Jimmy Smits. Joining this stellar cast is ABDUL KHOZA, portraying the character Washesha, celebrated for his memorable roles in Isibaya, The Wife, and Shaka iLembe, securing two SAFTA Golden Horn Awards for Best Supporting Actor. SHAMILLA MILLER, a skilled actress with a Bachelor's degree in Film and Live Performance from AFDA, brings her stage-honed craft to the screen, having featured in both local and international productions. FANA MOKOENA, known for his roles in World War Z, Hotel Rwanda, and The Lab, is a recipient of the 2010 SAFTA Golden Horn for Best Actor and the 2012 African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Lastly, SEAN CAMERON MICHAEL, a prolific South African talent in Hollywood, with over 130 credits in TV, film, and theatre, recently earned a 2022 SAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Fried Barry. Renowned for his portrayal of Richard Guthrie in Black Sails, Michael's contributions have earned him consideration for an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor and a SAG-Aftra award.

One of the central themes is the Asian expansion in Africa at the hands of corrupt government officials who siphon the funds to their own off-shore "nest-egg" bank accounts. Another is the sex trafficking and exploitation of minors affected by the war in Ukraine. Yet another is the fictional spiritual; journey of the exiled, African detective who returns to Africa to be suddenly confronted with memories of his past: who appears in Masinga's visions and whom he physically meets as Xia, an Asian sex trafficked victim, whose life he must save before she is the victim of the next ritual offering, and who guides his investigation to discover the truth of his youth, and to find redemption.

Director Statement

MASINGA – THE CALLING:

As a visual storyteller: screenwriter & producer - cinematographer & director:

I’ve been blessed with a tremendous amount of creative license in my films’ story concepts.

Initially these films were concepts created for musicians as music promo conceits: my crafting the lyrics of their songs into concepts of a visual storyline with three dimensional characters, art direction, wardrobe, and cinematographic styling to creating the ‘world of the story’ for that specific musical artist, and their specific song.

I knew the artists’ audiences intimately, and usually the clients trusted my judgement and accepted the ambitious concepts I presented for the moderate budgets they could afford.
This offered me a creative freedom to make films that spoke to the artists / which remained true to their lyrics and to the emotions of their songs – we did some crazy stuff & we had fun!

This methodology guided me through the complexities of MASINGA – THE CALLING’S script development, and throughout a critically demanding production phase where I persevered only by always looking for the artistry of balancing the protagonist’s quest in the story, while telling the complex subplots while delivering beautifully styled images that speak of Africa.

I trust my film MASINGA – THE CALLING is entertaining and visually dynamic to all foreign audiences: that the complex narrative is fascinating and unique and well told, as it unravels MASINGA’S complex past and exposes his spiritual journey to redemption.

Wishing you all a good viewing.
