On Marriage: Marriage no.1314

In Mandarin, the number 1314 means one’s whole life. Li Guo-hua, a dentist based in Taiwan, solely supports his family living far away in the UK. One day, he unexpectedly shuts down his dentist clinic as a means to force his wife to return to Taiwan with their children. However, after many years of separation, Guo-hua finally realizes that under the family union and the perfect marriage he’s been pursuing his whole life lies the irreconcilable differences between him and his estranged wife.

Cheng Wen-Tang has extensive experience in all aspects of film-making. As an independent producer, Cheng builds up his reputation in producing documentary, short films, and subsequently, expanding into feature films. All this has earned him the recognition of the local movie industry.

Director Statement

This story focuses on all the difficulties middle-age people suffer with when it comes to marriage, especially when one of the two parties stops improving, while the other never ceases to better oneself on various aspects such as knowledge, academia, career and social relationships. It is not strange to us to witness or even experience how two people in a marriage gradually grow apart from each other. I truly admire how the screenwriter created the characters with such depth, and those subtleties of daily life she poured into the story were utterly precious. While we were shooting the film I observed and listened how the plots resonated with our actors and crew, and I’ve learned so much from it. Lots of gratitude to our exceptional team and it is my greatest honor to have made this film with all of you.
