Maki Rankin, Mark Rankin and Brian Wilson have been involved in the film industry for the last fifteen years. After gaining experience working on separate projects, they joined together to create write, direct and score their own films. Their first short film, Namidagawa, was accepted into five festivals and was shown on Air Canada for most of 2021. Their film featured Maki and Mark's son, Koyu Rankin, who is best known for having voiced the part of Atari in Wes Anderson's 2018 stop-motion animation film, Isle of Dogs.
Their second short film, Kodoku, which featured both Koyu and Mark in the lead roles, was also accepted onto Air Canada's playlist as well as being screened at various festivals.
Whatever Happens is Maki and Mark's third collaboration and features a larger cast and crew. This film marks a tribology of films that are proudly filmed in Vancouver. It has already been selected by the Coast Mountain Film Festival and will be screened on March 30th in Vancouver.
Mark and Brian have collaborated on their first documentary, entitled, James 'Super Chikan' Johnson - A Life in Blues. The film explores the music and life of the famed Mississippi bluesman while also pointing a lens at the town of Clarksdale and the genre of the blues. The film was screened at the Clarksdale(Mississippi) Film and Music Festival.
