Alex Gentemann is an animation director and concept artist based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In 2025 he graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a degree in Story and Concept for Animation. For his senior thesis, Gentemann directed a small student team in creating the animated short 'Marginalia.'
I believe the best place to look for inspiration is in the past. Besides being an appreciator of historical aesthetics, I am also of the opinion that the people of yesterday were more relatable than we give them credit for. In my directing debut 'Marginalia,' I imparted the experiences of a misunderstood artistic child onto a medieval monk. Since both parties were known for doodling in the margins of their work, I figured this to be an appropriate character through which I could express my own thoughts, and wishes (as someone who was once the former.) Without spoiling anything, I hope any artist who was ever undervalued feels vindicated by the ending.
