Director Biography - Richard De Witt

Richard De Witt Biography

Raised with a strong humanist education and value system, and a strong sense of adventure, Richard’s passion for storytelling began at an early age. His mother was a schoolteacher, who during summer breaks would travel the globe with him to learn about and experience world civilizations and cultures. Richard became fascinated with cultures, ranging from the Mayans of Mexico to the Aborigines of Australia. Later, while his mother worked on her Master's degree in Education, Richard spent much of his time with his grandparents. His grandfather’s life was filled with eccentric adventures that ranged from being an aerial stunt choreographer for Howard Hughes’ motion picture Hells Angels, to running a famous circus, to serving as a fire chief for the City of Los Angeles. It’s no wonder Richard developed such a wanderlust and followed in the family's footsteps into even more adventures.

Richard grew up in the beach culture of Hermosa Beach, California. After graduating high school, he became a professional surfer. Once again, he found himself traveling the world for several years as part of surfing tournaments. Between his childhood travel experiences and those of his young adult life, Richard developed his own unique storytelling voice based on philosophically humanist, culturally empathetic, and globally conscious mythologies and ideas. Ideas that he carries with him into his work today.

Richard soon realized that the only art form that could truly reflect his life expressions was filmmaking. At the age of twenty, he made his first surf movie, and from their studied filmmaking at UCLA, which led to an on-staff production assistant job for two prominent producers, Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler. He worked for Chartoff/ Winkler for over four years and was involved in the script-to-screen process of making Round Midnight, Rocky IV, Betrayed, Music Box, and Goodfellas. Influenced by the talent of such academy award-winning filmmakers as Costa Gavras to Martin Scorsese, he experienced a rare blend of European and American style movie making that continues to influence him.

Wanting to develop his own filmmaking career, Richard applied and was accepted to AFI (The American Film Institute) for Cinematography. After shooting three films, and graduating with a Master’s degree in Cinematography, he did an internship with Academy Award-winning Director of Photography, Jack Green on Clint Eastwood’s film, The Rookie. From there, he went on to produce, write, direct, shoot, and edit his own 16mm short film, Water and Power. Gaining some recognition for his work, Richard soon found himself working in the industry on commercials, short films, documentaries, and independent feature films. Since then, he has immersed himself in screenwriting and has completed over a dozen feature-length and short screenplays. Richard has been involved in both documentary and narrative films that range from exotic locations such as Burma and Indonesia, to studio films such as The Last Cigarette for Dreamworks SKG. Recently, Richard was hired by a German film company to write his 11th screenplay, Ghost Warrior based on Germany’s most-sold book, Winnetou, originally written by, Carl May in the 1800’s.

As his life focus shifted to his family, he worked with his business partner, public educator, and producer, Dr. Everardo Stanton, to develop My Dad’s Garage, a post-Sesame Street, STEM-oriented, educational children’s educational show; and, The Fumppits, an animated comedy series, with legendary Hanna Barbara studio head, Bob Singer. From there New Film Group & Moving Pictures, Longbow Studios was established to develop and produce Richard’s work, of which Marbles and Bullets is the first to be produced with the films 12:21 An Outlaw Odyssey, Silent Duel, When Tree Fall, Cashmere, Oleanders and the Accordions, Efil, and Saveur in development.

Marbles and Bullets - A Filmmakers Reflection

By Richard De Witt

I was inspired to make Marbles and Bullets through a sense of cosmic writing where the writing and story chooses the writer. I try to write by staying open to the voices of my time and place, the challenges faced by my biracial family, and the sensibility and balance of the universe. I feel that this way of writing was passed down to me by my mother, a schoolteacher who loved human diversity. I believe that making movies, especially those that go beyond entertainment, is a life force on its own. The film is a cinematic poem about the human experience and the ongoing cycle of life with all its natural flaws. The film challenges viewers to consider what link in the chain of life they consider themself and whether they will use that to live in light, balance, and harmony or be pulled down into darkness.

As a filmmaker, I made the movie Marbles and Bullets as a response to the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the societal changes that followed. It was originally written in 2001 to reflect on the country's troubled past in a parable-like manner, in order to offer a glimmer of hope for the future. And, though Marbles and Bullets takes place during the American Civil War it has a message for all time. It tells the story of, and explores the power dynamic and relationship between, the two main characters who are opposites on every level; an illiterate Caucasian Confederate soldier, and a literate ten-year-old slave boy, as they wander through the woods on a journey home. I intended the story to challenge audiences to rise above the dark and unrelenting history of U.S. racial culture and politics, in order to offer a point of dialogue and conversation that starts from the point of view of universal love, humanity, listening, and understanding. Our film addresses important social issues that positively affect humanity, ranging from racial justice and equity issues, to the power of literacy, and the repercussions of U.S. history on today's politics and cultural challenges. We believe Marbles and Bullets is a thought-provoking and unique film that sheds light on these important topics.

Over the years of production, Marbles and Bullets was affected by various, catastrophic events, including political and cultural anarchy, violence, a biological and psychological pandemic, environmental collapse, and continuing social and economic division. As a result, the message of the film shifted from being a beacon for a new cultural and political renaissance to a story about looking at the darkness of the past and trying to find the light for a brighter future.

The heightened race-related themes of the film are a call to action for audiences around the world. The stories woven together to create the film's plot are based on historical and fictionalized premises, using the philosophies and ideas of both black slave writers and contemporary black authors as inspiration. The entire film is a parable about the power of love and literacy, the relevance of humanity, as well as the history and role of human slavery. Marbles and Bullets was actually filmed in the deep American South at the height of tensions, as the United States once again dangerously descended into a racially charged rhetoric of civil war.
But, through the power of understanding and friendship, our multiracial team created a beautiful piece of art in the face of hatred and ugliness. The film itself is groundbreaking cinema in that it is the first pairing of a young black child actor and an adult white male actor on screen together. The film is meant to be a Mark Twain-type parable about the power of love, communication, and literacy, over violence and hatred. It is a journey narrative similar to Huckleberry Finn.

As a filmmaker, what's most important to me is that an audience emotionally connects with my films before understanding them.

Movies are so very powerful in our world, they are dreams that never vanish...
