Mangta Jogi

Ghasita (28) returns to his village, on the outskirts of Varanasi, from the city of Kolkata after 10 years, only to find his family in poor financial condition. His elder brother, SHAMBHU, struggles to meet the needs of the family which consists of his elderly mother along with his wife and son.
A long time city dweller, Ghasita finds it beneath his dignity to accompany his elder brother in doing the petty jobs that they find in the village. Frustrated, Ghasita contemplates going back to the city until he meets his childhood friend, PAWARU (30). Pawaru, who used to be poor, is now a rich man. Ghasita is surprised and curious of the transformation.
The revelation leaves Ghasita stunned. Pawaru runs a begging business. Pawaru offers Ghasita to join his business. Seeing the offer as an opportunity to change the fate of his impoverished family, Ghasita accepts the offer.
Ghasita has to convince his poor yet self-respecting family before he can start the business. What makes the convincing part even more difficult is the fact that Pawaru wants Ghasita to start the business with his own mother as the beggar, the way Pawaru had started it.

Director Statement

Flow of Ganga seen from the numerous Ghats of Banaras have liberated and mystified me. I have tried to present a facet, a singular tale of my imagination of Banaras. I hail from Banaras where I did his schooling and joined my first degree course only to let go and realise the dream of making movies.
“Mangta Jogi” is my first film as Writer & Director. Why Mangta Jogi, because I was really close to my mother while she was around and the most basic human emotions and interactions fascinated her. I still remember her carrying some snacks always to give to people seeking alms on the road. I believe, as she believed, that people who beg are no different from the rest of us; they have a plethora of experiences to share and intricate tales to tell.
Through Mangta Jogi I have tried to capture the same gamut of emotions that my mother felt. I made this film a year after her passing away; it is an expression of life; and the making of this film has been therapeutic for me and I believe the same to be true for others. It is my honest effort to show a colour of Varanasi that people do not generally want to see; one which is there but gets lost in the vividness of the city
