An alchemist begins a spiritual journey that will test him several times. Among obscure caves and surreal places, the man faces a path full of strangeness and occult symbols that force him to face his fears, and then find himself. The goal is the legendary Philosopher's Stone that gives immortality. But it represents much more: a new life and a renewed awareness of himself and the world.

Un alchimista intraprende un viaggio spirituale, che lo metterà alla prova più volte. Tra oscure caverne e luoghi surreali, l’uomo affronta un percorso pieno di stranezze e simbologie occulte che lo costringono ad affrontare le proprie paure per poi ritrovare se stesso. L’obiettivo è la leggendaria Pietra Filosofale che dona l’immortalità. Ma essa rappresenta molto di più: una nuova vita e una rinnovata consapevolezza di sé e del mondo.

Director Biography - Carlo Frigenti

Carlo Frigenti was born in Naples in 1996. He attended the course of Cinema at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and, after several years of technical and artistic experimentation in writing and direction, guided by professionals such as Stefano Incerti, Massimo Martella, Francesca Amitrano, Sandro Dionisio and Romano Montesarchio, he graduated with honors in 2020. Meanwhile, he signes his first feature film as a screenwriter, "Corsa Abusiva", and directs his first short film, "Magnum Opus".

Carlo Frigenti nasce a Napoli nel 1996. Frequenta il corso di Cinema presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli e, dopo diversi anni di sperimentazione tecnica e artistica nei campi della scrittura e della regia, guidato da professionisti del settore come Stefano Incerti, Massimo Martella, Francesca Amitrano, Sandro Dionisio e Romano Montesarchio, si laurea con lode nel 2020. Intanto firma il suo primo lungometraggio come sceneggiatore, “Corsa Abusiva”, e dirige il suo primo cortometraggio, "Magnum Opus".

With this short film I wanted to tell the story of a journey that all human beings must undertake during their lives and that leads to the acceptance of death. Studying alchemy, I noticed the cinematic potential of those symbologies and, also inspired by the works of Alejandro Jodorowsky, I decided to use them to stage an esoteric and surreal journey in search for the answer, the Philosopher's Stone. An answer that will never be the same for everyone. That is why I have applied the esoteric elements of alchemy, which are indecipherable and mysterious, to a subject as complex to deal with as grieving process, offering my own personal view of it. Alchemists, and even science, have long pursued the dream of immortality but, personally, the greatest feat, the true Great Work ("Magnum Opus" in Latin) is accepting death as part of existence and continuing to live, aware of this truth.

Con questo cortometraggio ho voluto raccontare la storia di un viaggio che tutti gli esseri umani devono intraprendere durante la loro vita e che porta all'accettazione della morte. Studiando l'alchimia, ho notato il potenziale cinematografico di quelle simbologie e, ispirato anche dai lavori di Alejandro Jodorowsky, ho deciso di usarle per mettere in scena un viaggio esoterico e surreale alla ricerca della risposta, la pietra filosofale. Una risposta che non sarà mai uguale per tutti. Ecco perché ho applicato gli elementi esoterici dell'alchimia, indecifrabili e misteriosi, ad un tema così complesso da trattare come l’elaborazione del lutto, offrendone una mia personale visione. Gli alchimisti, e anche la scienza, hanno a lungo perseguito il sogno dell'immortalità ma, personalmente, la più grande impresa, la vera Grande Opera ("Magnum Opus" in latino) è accettare la morte come parte dell'esistenza e continuare a vivere, consapevoli di questa verità.
