Magdala Rose
Magdala Rose is a Medieval adventure based on the true story of a crusade against a pacifist Christian group, the Cathars, in Southern France. To this day, many people believe that these people were the guardians of a treasure of great significance, possibly even the Holy Grail. In 1244 the last of the Cathar heretics found protection at the Castle of Montségur where a sympathetic force of about 100 defending knights held off a crusading army of over 10,000 mercenaries. Finally the Cathars were forced to choose between their faith and their lives.

Born and raised in Brisbane, Dr. Paul Day had a fascination with film making from an early age. At 12 he experimented with making his own movie scenes featuring model spaceships that he built himself. At 14 he got the chance to act and help out in a couple of independent feature films and from this he began to understand how the film industry worked. At the time though, his main focus was on music. After leaving school, Paul worked as a professional musician in Brisbane and Gold Coast night clubs. He has been active in the local music industry ever since.
In 2000 he set up his own audio and video production house, Angel Studios, which gave him the resources to write, produce, and direct independent feature films. The first of these, Redemption 101 (2007) a tongue-in-cheek Sci-Fi feature, has gradually gained popularity as an underground cult classic. His next release, Beyond Redemption (The Visitor), a standalone prequel to the first film, premiered at the Gold Coast Film Festival in Queensland, Australia in 2012, and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the ASEAN International Film Festival in 2013. The third movie in the trilogy, Beyond Redemption: Space Captain continues the theme of Sci-Fi/Horror/Comedy. Paul won Best Director in the 2013 Australian Screen Industry Network (ASIN) awards for Space Captain, which premiered in August 2014 at Hoyts Cinema, Sunnybank Queensland, Australia and also screened at Roswell Filmfest & Cosmicon on July 4th 2015.
His latest feature, Magdala Rose is a change in genre and an ambitious attempt at a medieval adventure based on historical events. Although he was dealing with some serious and tragic topics in this story, Paul's sympathetic development of the characters allows some humour and ultimately hope to shine through in the film. Magdala Rose was completed in November 2019, and has since been nominated for more than a dozen awards, winning the Historical Education Award at the Nice International Film Festival 2020, and taking out 5 awards including Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay and Best Producer at the 2019 ASIN awards.
Paul is passionate about making movies with an entertaining story and engaging characters. He is known for his relaxed attitude to directing, and his enthusiastic approach helps to bring out the best in his cast and crew. Through his work at Angel Studios, he strives to encourage and promote the local creative industry and is always looking for ways to provide opportunities for new and emerging actors and film makers. In 2016 the Australian Screen Industry Network presented him with their Outstanding Career Achievement Award.
In addition to his numerous other talents, Paul is a medical doctor, with an MBBS from the University of Queensland.
