Director Biography - Madeleine Sherston, Jeremy Cumpston

Maddie is a young, talented and ambitious actor and film maker that has mastered the art of having a go. Having graduated from Drama School into a tough Covid ridden industry, Maddie decided to write, produce and co-direct her own movie and generously cast herself as the lead role. The semi autobiographical story 'Maddie's Red Hot' recently won best comedy at the Toronto International Women's Film Festival. Sherston's talent paired with determination makes her one to watch in the industry.

Jeremy Cumpston has been in the industry for over 30 years with Maddie's Red Hot being the 6th film he has directed. Jeremy's career began at WAAPA where he trained to be an actor alongside Hugh Jackman & Jason Clarke. Upon graduating Jeremy was a series lead on several Aussie TV shows in the 90's (All Saints) but most notably he established the esteemed Old Fitzroy theatre where he had a hand in 50 original plays and gave a start to many young actors most notably, Joel Edgerton. Jeremy has won several awards for his films, most recently Bilched (2019), his debut feature film, won the Grand Prize, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting actor at Chelsea Film Festival.

Director Statement

Dear Maddie graduated her 3 years of acting school into 2020's covid industry where you couldn't get an agent let alone land a gig. After a year or two or trying to break into the industry conventionally, Maddie finally (with a nudge from me), said, ‘Fuck this. I'm going to make my own movie and generously cast myself in the leading role.’ That fire and determination in real life runs parallel to the films story about a helpless young actor that just wants a bloody chance. The film is ambitious as hell but despite our measly budget, she has created a relatable and humorous comedy that’s been warmly received with all our test audiences. She's a 23-year-old female film maker that has overcome adversity by getting off her ass and having a go herself and that deserves to be recognised. It also helps that the film is a bloody winner...
