“Màt” Sicuri l’ultimo Diogene (“Mad” Sicuri the last Diogenes)

Fool or philosopher? Enzo Sicuri (1907-1988) was a homeless by choice in Parma, his city, after a normal childhood. He was called “Màt” (Mad), but he loved poetry, books, opera and never asked for alms. Sicuri recycled cardboard boxes to pay for a soup. His motto was “In life you can do without everything, apart from the air that we breathe”, taken from his mentor Dante Spaggiari.

Director Biography - Fabrizio Marcheselli, Francesco Dradi, Antonio Cavaciuti

Francesco Dradi (1970), Fabrizio Marcheselli (1972) and Antonio Cavaciuti (1974) are three journalists and authors from Emilia Romagna. Since the 1990s they have published books and hundreds of articles about the history and the stories of their cities, Parma and Piacenza. They are screenwriters, directors and producers of their first film: the documentary «“Màt” Sicuri l’ultimo Diogene» («“Mad” Sicuri the last Diogenes»). It was dedicated to the only homeless represented in a monument on an Italian square (Macina Square in Parma) and it was shot from March 2018 to March 2019 in the city centre of Parma, including the Royal Theatre (Teatro Regio), the cathedral and the ancient shops. This film is something to reflect on the meaning of life and freedom in the modern world.

Director Statement

In March 2018, 30th anniversary of the death of Enzo Sicuri, we noted that people of Parma were remembering him with love. We thought that the story of a “homeless by choice” was interesting for everybody and stiring up questions about the real values of life in contemporary society, which gives a greater importance to material things. We wanted people to think about subjects as environment, air, social tolerance, hospitality or, conversely, the fear. So we got inspiration from a narrative walk (by Dradi), from the only, original and unpublished interview with Sicuri (by Marcheselli) and from the idea of making a documentary film (by Cavaciuti).
