The adventurous human-led reintroduction of the Bald Ibis
The film uses the latest 360° 3-D technologies to bring the story of one of Europe’s most spectacular reintroduction programs to life: the human-led releasing into the wild of the near-extinct Bald Ibis. A sensory, science-driven and literally immersive experience, both emotionally and spatially.
One of the central problems of the reintroduction is the animals’ wanderlust. Since the flight path to suitable wintering grounds is not instinctive but learned from older, more experienced animals, young birds raised by humans are not familiar with it. Although they fly from their dwelling places in August, they do not do so together or in the same direction. As part of a resettlement project at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo, the young birds are cared for around the clock by human foster parents, with whom they build up the bond needed to learn the long journey across the Alps.
Using an ultralight aircraft, humans guide the Bald Ibis flock over the Alps, encouraging them to readopt historical migration patterns. From the start at Lake Constance, they fly over the northern Alps to Austria and South Tyrol. After 15 days and more than 800 km, the flock then reaches its wintering grounds in Tuscany.
The viewers follow the birds on this exciting and moving journey, learning a good deal about their complex rearing and the development of a loving bond with human foster parents. The 360° 3-D documentary shows in real and animated images the specific characteristics of the animals, their migration routes, the factors influencing their flights and the challenges they must overcome along the way.

Directors' Statement
MYRIAD. Where we connect. – 360° 3-D documentary
Back to nature: join the Northern Bald Ibis on an unforgettable journey
The Northern Bald Ibis is a very special bird. It is not a classic beauty, but with its curved reddish beak, bald head and black feathered mane on the back of its crown, it undoubtedly stands out. If you are lucky enough to come across it!
Once at home in Central Europe, the migratory bird is now almost extinct in the wild. Still. But through a reintroduction program, scientists are working to return the Northern Bald Ibis to its original habitat. You can be part of this unique project – using the latest 360° 3-D technologies!
We catapult you right into the thick of things, high up in the air. Here, ultralight aircraft steer the endangered Bald Ibis birds over the Alps, showing them the travel routes of their wild ancestors.
You will get to know the Northern Bald Ibis as young animals, carefully reared by hand and familiarized with humans. You can observe how they slowly become fledglings and learn to cover further distances on flight trainings until they finally set off on their historic journey southward. When the birds take off, you go aloft with them. They whiz past your head at close range – almost as if you were flying amongst them.
We live in a time when entire ecosystems are threatened by human activities – including those of the Northern Bald Ibis, a bird which is still endangered and worthy of protection. “MYRIAD. Where we connect. – 360° 3-D documentary” portrays a species threatened by extinction, making the emotional story of one of Europe’s most spectacular reintroduction programs tangible. We make use of 360° 3-D technology to ensure an experience that is as sensory as it is scientifically based. In close collaboration with the LIFE Northern Bald Ibis team led by biologist Dr. Johannes Fritz, unique images of the animals have been created, complemented by artistic animations. Join us on an unforgettable journey!
