SARIRI
"Sariri" follows five protagonists from Switzerland, Austria, Bolivia, and Peru, exploring their personal stories and deep connections to the mountains. As they attempt the first descent of the 6,074-meter-high Chachacomani in Bolivia, they knowingly embrace risk. But beyond the physical challenge, the film also delves into the invisible power of altitude—not just as a natural force but as a deeply spiritual presence.
While the European mountaineers approach the mountains as places of adventure and personal achievement, for many indigenous locals, these peaks hold a sacred, mystical presence. Sariri navigates these contrasting worldviews while also confronting the neocolonial dynamics at play when Westerners travel to South America to chase their alpine ambitions. The film questions what it means to move through these spaces as an outsider and how different worldviews shape our relationship with nature.
Told in a slow, unconventional style, "Sariri" leaves room for interpretation, allowing the audience to reflect the stories unfolding before them. By weaving together these diverse perspectives, the film asks what it truly means to connect with the mountains—and who gets to define that connection.

With Sariri I tried to question the Style and Narrative of the conventional "expedition" films as it developed in the last years in the Outdoor film genre. Coming from a documentary background I integrated a slower paced edit style and more space for the deeper topics of each character. I think as an european filmmaker you need to reflect the power dynamics of traveling the world and conquering mountains in "distant" countries. Thats what I wanted to do in Sariri.
