A MOUNTAIN PORTRAIT

A MOUNTAIN PORTRAIT is a film project and collaboration by and with Andrea Hackl and Elisa Pol

ELISA POL - actress, based in Italy
ANDREA HACKL - choreographer, dancer, visual artist / film maker, based in Amsterdam and Austria

The mountains, an archaic powerful environment.

Existing as if beyond time, guardians of this world. A soul landscape.

What is the fascination with this environment that some feel?

This film is a collaboration and meeting point of the two performers, two women with a special relationship to the mountains. It is inspired by the meaning that this environment has for them personally.
It is a collage of personal stories overlapping with stories and anecdotes of other female wanderers and mountaineers, such as Nan Shepherd (The Living Mountain) and Rebecca Solnit (Wanderlust).

    SPECIAL MENTION
Director Biography - Andrea Hackl

I work as interdisciplinary choreographer, dancer & visual artist and have been touring internationally with my own work as well as in the performances of other choreographers – e.g.: Jasper van Luijk (@Korzo Productions), Cascade Dance Theater, Emanuel Gat Dance, United C, Suzy Blok and toured major venues and festivals worldwide. My performative as well as visual work has been presented internationally.

My work is foremost a celebration of life. I cherish the power and poetry of the human body. Transformative processes, ritual and rite of passage are essential to my exploration. My practice is definitely inspired by cross-pollination of different disciplines and over the years I've been collaborating with musicians for live performances.

I produce dance films that are being presented in festivals world wide, of Silent Fragments has won two awards for Best Film @ Cinedanza Italy and Best Choreography @ InShadow, Portugal and is being in the competition of this year's edition of the festival CINEDANS in Amsterdam. My last work BELE BELTZA has received the PEARL ARTIST PRIZE at POOL Festival and an honorable mention at Cinedanza and various awards for Best Experimental / Art Film. As extra dimension, I am exploring the medium of video / installation in my performances.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT
I am an interdisciplinary artist, moving between two fields: dance/performance + film/photography. My work is a celebration of the life force within us human beings, be it my passion as performer / choreographer or in my visual and film work.
Coming from the dance world, I am a maker with a strong connection to the sensorial, cherishing the poetic
power of the human body and movement. This sensorial perception influences my interaction with the world and my work. What I love is to play with multiple layers, to journey between the narrative / rational and the abstract / sensorial. Working with film opens up another dimension and allows me to merge the physical / kinetic with the visual. A very interesting place of exploration is for me where performance + film meet, exploring the medium of video and installation.
In whichever way it might have expressed itself at different times, my innate calling is to seek, create with and give a voice to the power which permeates life, expressing itself within nature and, equally, our core as human beings, through our power, our compassion and ability to overcome and to love.
Image, film, performance, I want to share 'experiences', a journey, to open up a window onto a universe and – an aspect of – the world. My exploration is influenced by a love for the poetic and fascination for the spiritual dimension of life, a maybe purist but definitely not sterile aesthetic, the love for adventure, travel and a
calling to zoom in on our connection with the earth.
This is my political act: to create work that is embracing life and life affirming.
