Writer/Director
Tom Lynch grew up in Tipperary and now lives in Dublin. He spent several years working and travelling around the world, visiting Asia, North Africa and Australia.
He then returned to college and graduated from Maynooth University in Ireland with a degree in English Literature and Philosophy. He worked in business for several years with IBM, before he started making films.
He has written and directed several short films, which have played in many festivals in Ireland and abroad.
He is the Writer and Director of the 'Proof of Concept' film 'DOCKLANDS' and the writer of the 'DOCKLANDS' feature film screenplay.
In this short film, I explored the theme of loss, and how it can impact on one’s life.
Losing a loved one affects the rest of your life. It can affect how you engage with the world – and how you react to new experiences. I tried to give some sense of that in the film.
This little film also looks at the challenges of working as an artist (in this case an actor) – and how our moods and emotions are continually flowing through our work.
I focused on telling the story in a simple and direct way. I didn’t include a lot of dialogue in the film. And I have looked at using visual storytelling as much as possible in the piece.
We shot ‘Mother’ with a small crew, and it was exciting to work with such a small unit. Everybody worked very hard to bring this little story to life.
Our actors really engaged with the material. And they were fantastic to work with. Sarah really explored the character. And I loved her interpretation of the role.
And I was delighted to work with Chiara, who is just starting off her acting career now.
Making this short film was a very rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to explore some challenging material. And to work with an incredible cast and crew.
