Shyama Sundar Majhi is from India's Balasore District of State Odisha. He has studied BS in Power Engineering from BITS Pilani. He is a well-known writer, director, and lyricist in Santali Cine Industry for his uncompromising devotion to framing magnificent creative masterpieces. He started the audiovisual production works and film-making with the motto of "Payback to the Society" and he is committed to working with the mission of progressive development of the Santali Community.
He was very passionate to do creative works since his childhood and he started working in Santali's entertainment industry with a music video album. He directed BIN GIRA PERA, a Santali music video album in the year 2015 which included seven songs. In the year 2018, he worked as a story writer, lyricist, and director for a Santali feature film SABARNAKA SURUBALI. In the year 2019, he worked as a writer, art director, and director in a short Santali film titled KUKLI. In July 2022, he worked as a scriptwriter, art director, and director for a Santali short film MIRU.
United Nations had proclaimed the year 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages with the following objectives: (i) to draw attention to the critical losses of indigenous languages, (ii) to raise awareness of the consequences of the endangerment of Indigenous languages across the world and (iii) to establish a link between language, development, peace, and reconciliation.
Being a responsible citizen from an Indigenous community I had a dream to represent my Santal community worldwide through audiovisual storytelling. In the year 2019, I worked on the Santali short film KUKLI under the banner of MM Production and started participating in film festivals both at the National and International levels and got huge recognition. My film KUKLI is the first tribal short film in the Santali language from Odisha that won an International award from abroad and has created history in the Santali cine industry. Till now my film KUKLI has won 130+ National and International awards out of 190 officially selected film festivals across 16 countries.
It is not a matter of awards, but it is sure that my film KUKLI is successfully highlighting the Santal Social System and promoting a tribal language, literature, culture, and tradition worldwide!
I feel happy that my film KUKLI has successfully contributed a small part in fulfilling the objectives of the International Year of Indigenous Languages (2019).
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed the year from 2022 to 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages and UNESCO has led the global efforts to draw attention to the critical situations of indigenous languages for the preservation, revitalization, and promotion around the world.
Recently I have worked on the Santali short film MIRU under the banner of Pinky Production House in association with MM Production. It is another small effort from my side to draw attention to the Santal community of India. Through my film MIRU, I have extended my level of best support to fulfill the theme "International Decade of Indigenous Languages".
