MILLUNI 1965

The Milluni Massacre
May 24, 1965

The mining company began its life in 1920. La Fabulosa Mines Consolidate, the name under which the mine was founded, had Prince Philip of Great Britain as shareholders and exported Tin. Milluni Miners Workers Union was founded in 1946 and they immediately attended the Extraordinary Congress of Pulacayo where the Pulacayo Thesis was sanctioned, which marked the ideological principles of the Bolivian Workers' struggle. Years later, they participated in the revolution of April 1952, their militia, with dynamite in hand, stifled any attempt at counter-revolution, but Milluni's miners still faced a tough battle, a decade later.

On November 4, 1964 Rene Barrientos (Vice President), overthrew Víctor Paz Estensoro and took his place. Faced with the clear anti-worker character of Barrientos, the COB decided to fight to maintain its social conquests (right to unionization, freedom, and salary), for which an indefinite strike was decreed on May 12, 1965. In the city of La Paz, the factory radio was silenced, the same fate befall the union headquarters of builders that was assaulted. While in the mining districts the massacre had begun in the Southern Central Council on May 23, the mine was taken and militarized with a balance of nearly ten dead, the next target was Milluni, who complied with the strike enunciated by the F.S.T.M.B. and the COB.

It was a May 24, in the mining district of Milluni, the arrival of the military troops was heard, who arrived by land and air, immediately the workers organized themselves in the resistance of the center, armed with old mausers and dynamite. One of the main objectives of the Caza planes was the Milluni mine, however the union as a strategy took 4 soldiers as hostages and tied them to the radio antennas. That action infuriated the uniformed men who, seeing themselves humiliated, hurled bursts of fire from the planes, into the trenches, the roads and others. Many lives were lost and the resistance was overwhelmed with blood. The main leader Natalio Mamani, recognized for his participation in the National Revolution, had to flee into hiding, because fraud charges were brought against him, instead a labor coordinator was placed in the Barrientos government and the mine was militarized May 29, 1965. As a mark of those fateful days, there is a cemetery that is the place where those brave workers who gave their lives rest, for the defense of rights and freedoms of our country.
