Director Biography - Jonathan Parpa Jurilla

Jonathan Jurilla started doing animation shorts in 2006 using open source softwares. His animation shorts gave him some opportunities to be featured in the animation festivals in his country, and he got one jury citation award for his short, Samtang Bilog ang Bulan.
The time consuming demands of 3D animation and the lack of collaborators led him to focus on his full time job as a university professor at the University of the Philippines.
In 2016, he decided to join a short film festival and his short film, Isla, got him another jury citation at the Cinekasimanwa, the Western Visayas Film Festival.
He made his first full length film, Mariit in 2019.

Director Statement

The Covid 19 pandemic has a devastating effect on human lives not only that it brought physical deaths among millions of lives but it has also affected the way we live and how we manage our mental health.
The quarantine restrictions imposed by the Philippine government caused several hardships among the Filipino people and one of those hardly-hit sectors are the women and children. Women have to endure not only the severe repercussions of the pandemic but also the several abuses they get from their male counterparts. When locked down with abusive husbands, they suffer terrible abuses but when their husbands are away, they still suffer verbal abuses and the effect of being made dependent on their male partners.
When left alone, who should they rely on? When they suffer from severe psychological trauma what should they do?
This film seeks to address these questions.
This film also links the horror genre with the psychology of an individual suffering from severe mental health condition.
Moreover, this film is the director’s first venture towards mobile filmmaking. The covid 19 lockdown is also responsible for this decision to shift to mobile filmmaking because the director lost his access to the filmmaking gears he uses. The pandemic makes him realize the great potential in making movies with a cellular phone.
