Lucifer's Gala - The Church of Satan 50th Anniversary Conclave Ritual

This is a gritty documentary short film by Robert Merciless depicting the 50th anniversary conclave ritual of the Church of Satan. The church was established on April 30, 1966 by Anton Szandor LaVey who later went on to author The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals establishing for the first time in human history the actual formalized practice of Satanism as a religion. It is a atheistic and materialistic religion centering the mythical character of Satan as a symbol for a life of strength focused on indulgence in earthly pleasures in the here and now rather than abstinence, spirituality and hope for a fanciful after life. The church has endured and flourished and LaVey's books have remained in constant publication for over half a century. To celebrate 50 years of the existence of the church, a large group of members and intimate guests from around the world gathered in Poughkeepsie, NY on April 30, 2016 for an elegant gala and ritual to mark the occasion. Compiled from decade-old photos and video shot in low light in a noisy room, this somewhat rough production was created in order to document that historical event. It provides a very rare look at a complete, large-scale, authentic Satanic group ritual. CONTENT WARNING: This film contains partial nudity and religious blasphemy.

Director Biography - Robert Merciless

Robert began his career in the entertainment industry as an agent for a lecture agency in the late 1980's representing authors, journalists, former government officials and a couple of actors for the contracting and execution of their paid public speaking engagements. After some graphic design training, he took on the additional duty of leading and managing the design and production of the agency's marketing materials. He first entered the documentary film world when he worked as an uncredited publicist for the Emmy-award winning and Oscar-nominated film "Waco: The Rules of Engagement." He later learned the art and science of video production and editing through certification with his hometown community cable access television channel. That background led to his stint as Director and Producer of a weekly cable access studio production for the American Red Cross. Called to active duty as a military reservist, he used those same skills to slightly improve the terrible composition and lighting of Pentagon video teleconferences. This made him a minor hero of the military bureaucracy both at the Pentagon and in an active war zone. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science as well as a Master of Arts in Administration. As a member of the Church of Satan and amateur history buff, he has written and published several articles pertaining to the history of literary, political and religious depictions of Satan. These include the historical introductions for two books; "The Sorceries and Scandals of Satan" by Henry M. Tichenor and "A Hymn to Satan & Other Poems" by Giosué Carducci. Robert is also the proprietor of Rabid Crow Arts & Graphics which specializes in digital restoration and recreation of old historical images of the devil in various contexts. Several of his artworks from that endeavor were exhibited at the Artomatic exhibition in Washington, DC in 2024. He was a primary organizer of the Church's 50th anniversary celebration in 2016. In 2025 he partnered with co-producer David Harris to extract the media files of that historic event and compile them into a multi-media documentation of it. The result was the documentary short film, "Lucifer's Gala."

Director Statement

I’m an amateur history enthusiast and have written and published several articles and book introductions exploring literary, political, and religious depictions of Satan. That interest informs my visual creative practice as the proprietor of Rabid Crow Arts & Graphics, where I focus on digitally restoring and recreating historical images of the devil. Several of these works were exhibited at Artomatic in Washington, DC in 2024.
My work—whether visual, written, or filmic—is driven by a fascination with how culture constructs meaning around symbols of transgression, power, and myth. I’m drawn to the places where history, art, and the darker corners of the imagination intersect, and I use my craft to bring those intersections to light.
