Director Statement

As a film director, I mainly focus on feminist issues and philosophy connected to romance. My passion is utilizing my sensitivity to spatial aesthetics like mise-en-scene, light & shadow, and clarity of vision to tell stories in depth. Encouraging women to discover their potential to share social responsibilities and inspiring children to express themselves bravely and pursue spiritual freedom is my value.

For some time in cinema history, the power of American film was limited by specific policies like Hays Code. I wanted to make a unique silent film to make up for some of the regrets of that period of history, and that's why Loving Strangers is a contemporary silent short. Film is the seventh art, and art knows no borders and advocates freedom. I'd rather keep a positive tone (healthy and cool ideas with powerful visions) in the film than deliberately discuss discrimination. Modern people have too much to bear, let them breathe while watching this silent short is also one of my goals.

The background of this film connected to my experience during the Covid-19 pandemic, people stayed at home working or studying frequently, and there were surrounding high-rise buildings with windows around my neighborhood, which inspired me to make a film based on windows. It reminded people of Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954) while I was pitching, but Wings (1927) was the one that inspired me. Most actors are filming for the first time, so I sent them some clips as references for the mirror exercise. The clips referenced were from Wings and some other classic German Expressionist silent films. Also, we encouraged the cast to not dress too modernly, with iconic 40s makeup and played 40s music on set. It was a fun production. The metropolitan view reveals we didn't strictly follow the retro vibe but remains the difference in a not distracting way to express a new concept from the 40s. I have more content to turn this short into a colorful feature film when there's a chance.
