A film about love, death, and synth music.

The year is 1986. Fredrik (Erik Svedberg-Zelman) and Nina (Rebecca Plymholt) lives in a small village in Skåne. Fredrik is passionate about his music, while Nina dreams of becoming a photographer. Fredrik's synth-pop band is set to perform their first gig, but his parents are on the verge of ruining everything for him. Everything comes to a head during the most crucial weekend of Fredrik's life.

"Düsseldorf, Skåne" unfolds over four days in August 1986. The setting is the rural landscape of Skåne, in an unnamed village in the Österlen region, away from where tourists usually venture. Here lives 19-year-old Fredrik, the lead singer of the local synth band "Vision Moderne". Saturday marks their long-awaited first performance. The community center's stage is set for him. Everything is at stake – this is meant to be his ticket out, to Berlin, London, or Düsseldorf, the birthplace of Kraftwerk. At least that's how it feels.
But it's not just a storm brewing within Fredrik. Events around him begin to turn his life upside down. His relationship with his girlfriend Nina seems to be crumbling, while his parents are on the brink of destroying Fredrik's life. Fredrik is forced to make some crucial decisions. The film is supported by the Swedish Film Institute, Swedish public service television company SVT and co-produced with Film in Skåne - the regional film fund in southern Sweden.

The film will premiere in cinemas in Sweden 9th of February 2024.

Director Statement

"Düsseldorf, Skåne" is a coming-of-age and love story that deals with teenage emotions, class, parents struggling with life, love, death, and the power of creativity and creation as a means of survival.
The main aspects of the film's theme have been with me for several decades. In some respects, it's a story I experienced myself, which I have then processed and freely added layers of fiction to during the creation of the script. I, too, was a synth lover when I was the same age as the main character, Fredrik. However, unlike the rural Skåne setting, I was in 1980s Malmö, where, at 15, I founded and composed music for the synth band "Ausgang Verboten". I listened to bands like "Kraftwerk", "Depeche Mode", "Yazoo", "DAF," "Human League", "Front 242", and "Yello". That period left a deep impact on me—I've continued composing music my entire life, and, for instance, I wrote the original music for "Düsseldorf, Skåne." Composing provided me with a significant escape during a turbulent adolescence.
Apart from the drive to share personal experiences and events that left an impression on me as a young person, there has always been another factor fuelling my desire. That is the very peculiar fact – as far as I'm aware – that there isn't a single feature film set in the synth music environment. It's almost like there isn't a single film that takes place against the backdrop of the world of rock music. It's quite strange considering how significant the music scene was and still is.
