Eray Demir is a Turkish Film Director. He graduated from Maltepe University Fine Arts Faculty in 2013. During the university years, he directed the short films "The Fate" 2010, "The Clockman" 2012, "Downrise" 2013 and "Once Upon a Time in Jamaica" 2013. These shorts competed and were awarded in many national and international film festivals.
He has been shooting TV commercials since 2016 in many countries and for many brands.
When we first started developing this film with the creative team, one of the key considerations was its distribution. The film was set to be broadcast on social media platforms—widely used by young people in Qatar—as well as on Outdoor ScreenWalls positioned every 10 meters along the city’s busiest streets. This meant the film had to be framed within a vertical screen format across both platforms.
Previously, director Damien Chazelle had explored Vertical Cinema in his work for Apple, highlighting the unique compositional and narrative aspects of this format. Taking this into account, we believed that embracing Vertical Cinematography would amplify the impact of our film. Additionally, Qatar’s urban architecture naturally aligns with verticality, adding another layer of meaning to our approach. By crafting a commercial film specifically designed for this format, we not only reinforced the principles of Vertical Cinema but also contributed to its evolution.
Beyond its technical choices, the film moves fluidly between Qatar’s traditional and modern landscapes, visually capturing the country’s cultural continuum. This interplay allows young Qatari's to recognize both their heritage and their future, reflected in their own identities. Moreover, the film’s message carries a universal resonance, making it relatable and impactful beyond geographic boundaries.
