Zach Schnitzer is an award-winning actor, director, writer, and producer. As an actor, Schnitzer’s credits include THINGY, an upcoming horror feature produced by Joe Swanberg, and several equity theatre productions in Chicago and Minneapolis. As a writer/director/actor/producer, Schnitzer has worked on short films like Sweet Disposition (2024) and To The Moon (2024). Loafers is his first feature as a writer/director/producer.
Because being an artist doesn’t pay, Zach is also a substitute teacher and a server in Chicago.
I finished the first draft of “Loafers” a few weeks before graduating from college. My producer, and cousin, Nate, read it a few days before he graduated college. This movie was borne out of post grad anxieties. Who are we going to be? How will our lives change? Will our friends still be our friends?
I wanted to deal with this anxieties head on. I love the adult coming of age genre, and I wanted to make my own entry that felt like it reflected me and my friends’ experience of growing into adults. I wanted to make it, too, with these very same friends who, like me, were struggling to find projects that were fulfilling. We thought it was time to create our own opportunities and make work we really care about. “Loafers” was a way for me and my friends to grapple with our anxieties, but it was also a way for us to stake our claim in the ground — we’re artists, and we want to create whether people will let us or not.
This is a movie made by a group of friends. It’s complicated, funny, and sweet. It interrogates the world I’m in and some of the friendships I’ve had. It’s everything I dreamed it could be.
