Lloyd

Lloyd follows its titular character through a series of vignettes, stitched together to visualise his nadir. After losing his mother, something intimated throughout the film, Lloyd contends with a pernicious inheritance: the legacy his mother Sylvia left behind in the fictional “Wellington”, a town drowning in discord.

Director Biography - Trae Whyte

Trae Whyte is a Black, queer screenwriter and filmmaker originally from the country parish of St. Thomas on the island of Jamaica. He experienced his adolescence and began his early adulthood in California, traveling between San Diego, where he studied to earn a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, Media and Film Production, and Los Angeles, where he currently claims residence. The duality which grew from his shared time in Jamaica and the United States begs for a constant examination of the effects of his socialisation and re-socialisation on his understanding of the world. Whyte is concerned with the nuanced politics of Blackness and particularly the many divisions of identities that make a conceptual "Black community" a misnomer too fraught to ever fully actualise.

Director Statement

LLOYD (2020) is my story, in part. It is also a letter of love and gratitude to my mother who fought the world many times over to cover me from its scorn. It is the story of inherited grief, anger, and pain, of uncertainty and isolation when community is needed most. In vignettes coloured by the character Lloyd's past, the film transpires in moments of recollection just before his life and the life of his partner change forever.
