Live Free or Take Five was created as my capstone project for my master's program. With only the knowledge of my experience as a film actor and a small crew of friends, I knew the story I needed to tell was about the value of community theatre and the impact it can have on an individual's life. I think there's something deeply endearing and special about a group of people who find time, in between their jobs and families, to come together and create something meaningful. That's what community theatre is all about, and I needed to find a way to not only showcase the talent that pours out of these people, but the passion they have for the things they create. And New Hampshire has some of the most tenacious, resourceful, thoughtful people you can find in theatre. I can still vividly remember how welcoming this community was for me at a time I truly needed it.
While I do have many friends that I met through theatre, I also have plenty of friends who are not theatre people (but still happily see my shows). Part of the inspiration for this documentary was to get people more engaged in their local community theatre scene. New Hampshire in particular has a pretty unique collection of theatre from classic plays and musicals to experimental productions, and even new works, two of which are featured in this documentary. There truly is something for everyone. In New Hampshire, where the arts have been historically underfunded, many theatres rely on ticket sales and donations to fund their seasons.
What I hope will resonate with people is the drive and determination of this community, and the immeasurable impact art can have on all of us if we choose to engage with it.
