<Listen to the Colours of the Wind> ~ songs in-between dusk and dawn (30min)
What are the colours of the portrait of our world today? Scattered in the seashore are abandoned items of myriad colours, but they look dull and noisy.
A giant tyre seems immovable - we are uncertain of its origin. Has it dropped down from the plane, or is it from a large truck? The buffaloes wandering on the island could hear the remnants of the colours of the wind.
Plastic beads, syringes, children's slippers and sunglasses for play, unopened detergent, packaging, minute plastic articles that remain ever present, washed up ashore and become inseparable from the sands, mingled with, choking the mangrove roots and defacing our common home.
But these fragments are gathered and collected like pieces of abandoned memories as they unite together in the form of a rooster wind chime dangling down on the propeller fan and start to move and acquire a new leash of life in the wind...
A war against our nature and social ecology has been waged by us, the colonizers of this world. Displacement and homelessness are widespread in environmental damage. Could we re-claim a sentient co-presence of and responsibility for these in-between, abandoned spaces in this uncertain time between dusk and dawn?
A poetic experimental film moving with and dancing to respond to the wind, documenting a rubbish collection and up-cycling effort on a bay of an island and the call of the wind to regenerate the land where buffaloes rove along the trails in outlying Hong Kong.

Experimental indie film-maker, visual, performance and installation artist, focusing on visual and dance poetry and the poetics of movement in time and space and moving bodies. Maria has held two exhibitions of her video art and installation at Cattle Depot Artist Village (Nov - Dec 2022) and JCCAC L1 Gallery (Feb 2023) and a screening of the eco-poetry films at Kino Screening Room, Eaton Hotel (Sept 2023), in Hong Kong, with an accompanying book of poetry, supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
<Voyage of the Phoenix-Stone inside a Cage> is the first poetry film made by the director. This poetry film has been officially selected for FESTIVAL ANGAELICA and Make Art not Fear festivals. Maria's second poetry film <Listen to the Colours of the Wind> has been shown in the International Migration and Environmental Film Festival. Her third poetry film <Bougainvillea in Bloom> has received a Silver Award (Indie Short Film) at the New York Movie Awards and Official Selection at the Roma Short Film Festival.
Maria has worked on public and community art, including mural painting. She has also worked on community theatrical productions including a community performance art show at the Tai Po Black box Theatre as part of the public art workshops organized by the TEFO (2021), with her dance and music performance and poetry and video work <Bougainvillea by the Waters> and multimedia show <Where is Our Sea? A Rhapsody of the Isle> as part of the creative workshop organized by the Littebreath Theatre, with her short film <Yau Ma Tei: Self-Portrait in Green> (2018).
She has worked on collaborative exhibition/ performance installation on the theme of Ecology as part of Zurich-HK Transcultural Collaboration (2017), including performances and mixed media video and performative installation exhibition in Hong Kong: Mirror of Emptiness (X** Gallery) and Floating Identities (Connecting Space) and Kowloon Park – You are What you Eat (Kaitak Campus, AVA).
Maria has completed MA in Visual Arts at the Academy of Visual Arts, HKBU, and her graduation show included a live performative installation with poetry film. Her BA in Archaeology and Anthropology (First Class) with the University of Oxford has a focus on visual anthropology and the anthropology of art, movement, migration, identity and representation.
Film making is like a dance of poetry and vision moving with the skin shining in light and shadows, capturing moments when the souls and bodies on and off screen engage in a conversation about chance, encounter, the making and unmaking of stories, memories and meanings.
In this experimental dance poetry film <Listen to the Colours of the Wind>, I am the director, the film maker, the artist, the poet, the editor, the choreographer, the dancer, the installation, lighting, sound and costume designer at the same time. My streams of consciousness and unconscious wanderings and meanderings become a total experience.
Directing becomes a way of losing control rather than taking control when I let chance, serendipity and the experiential and experimental process of discovery make their marks on the film making process.
