Lily Of The Valley

Rita is a single mother who is very successful in her business. She has almost everything she had ever wanted in life, except for more time with her daughter, Lily. After a long time, Rita feels guilty for not being able to take care of Lily, which is why she decided to redeem it by celebrating Lily's 18th birthday with an intimate party at her house. Rita wants to ensure that everything is perfect for Lily’s birthday, especially with a surprise gift she has prepared with her lovely boyfriend, Daniel.

However, something happened before the party even starts. Rita finds a piece of evidence that Lily is falling deeply in love with Daniel. This breaks her heart. Rita becomes very jealous of her own daughter. At the same time, Rita’s confidence drops as she feels that her old age is getting into her skin.

When everything is already too late for Rita, as she found out this painful truth nearing the birthday celebration, she decides to hide her jealousy as the party must go on. The guests have arrived — her mother Ava, her ex-husband John and his new wife, Sarah. The night, which is supposed to be beautiful, turns into a hellish evening, especially when everyone is waiting to see Daniel, including Lily. Now, her redemption has been turned into zero.

After Daniel arrives, Rita can no longer hold her pain. She explodes. She wants to burn the surprise gift for Lily. It is also revealed that the gift is three expensive vacation tickets for Rita, Daniel, and Lily.

Suddenly, when everyone feels very confused about what is going on with Rita, Ava stops her from being too dramatic with her wise words. Rita finally realizes that there are more important things than just herself, which is her own “FAMILY,” despite requiring much sacrifice from her side.

Director Statement

Social cultural is always the theme that I want to tell as a storyteller with a deep admiration of a Poetic Realism in Visual Storytelling. This film is based on my family experience as a Chinese Indonesian. And also I want to show another perspective of bourgeoisie life style family in Indonesia.
