Jim is a Filipino-American filmmaker whose work has screened internationally, and whose unconventional style has garnered critical notice. He was named one of Newcity's FILM 50 of 2016 and 2018, alongside such production notables as Dick Wolf ("Law & Order"), The Wachowskis (The "Matrix" Trilogy), and Joe Swanberg.
His original feature script—a dark, coming-of-age drama—SUNNY DAYS, received excellent coverage from Electric City Entertainment ("Blue Valentine," "The Place Beyond the Pines") and OddLot Entertainment ("Drive," "Ender's Game"), while The Black List called it: “a beautifully written, complex character study with a bewitching atmosphere...evaluated purely on the depth, artfulness, and insight of its writing, [it] is better than the vast majority of scripts.”
His feminist psychological horror short, VIOLETS, took home the 22nd Chicago Underground Film Festival's Audience Award, while The Independent Critic called it, “difficult to describe...but impossible to forget.”
Jim's latest work is the erotic arthouse romance, LIBRARY HOURS. Lisa Vandever of CineKink describes it as, “beautifully shot and impeccably realized...a lush tale of literary longing, a sumptuous meeting of both mind and flesh.”
"The material in the hands of a lesser writer or director could have been exploitive, sexually gratuitous and even insensitive, but under Jim Vendiola the short is anything but."
—Starry Constellation Magazine
LIBRARY HOURS is a queer, femme-driven love story about books and bondage. Provocative, yet Fifty Shades smarter than...that other movie.
We wanted to deliver an intriguing tale with a unique approach—a satisfying viewing experience that's also an alternative to the bulk of mainstream content (non-diverse, male-driven, largely heterosexual narratives). The film introduces renowned genderfluid, pansexual fetish model Cam Damage, and SFX make-up artist Melissa Vento in their debut roles. With a cameo by beloved internet cat, Captain Pancakes!
I made LIBRARY HOURS with a gender- and ethnically diverse crew, with socially conscious and sex-positive intent: as incentive to reaching the film's crowdfunding goal, I donated the equivalent of 10% (out-of-pocket) to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which was doubled during a PPACT promotion to total $1,000 in donations on behalf of the film.
