Libertyville

At an Orthodox cemetery in the Midwest, 11-year-old Suzana contends with her immigrant grandmother’s tyranny as the family makes their weekly pilgrimage to picnic on Grandpa’s grave. Come for the grief, stay for the show.

Shooting "Libertyville" was a magical mix of joy and serendipity. Usually everything that can go wrong on a shoot does go wrong, but this time everything worked perfectly. The locations were perfect, and the California wildfires created a beautiful, soft exterior light. Even shooting during the pandemic meant that all my A-team crew members were tired of sitting at home and came out to play. This was my first time directing a film in a foreign language, so my focus was entirely on the emotions of the actors. The writer and lead actress, Suzana Norberg, helped me keep a close watch on the authenticity of the piece. I hope the world loves this slice of life as much as I do.
