Director Statement

Like all of us, COVID put a huge monkey wrench in my 2020 plans. My horror feature that was in pre-production got put on the back burner and my busy brain needed another project to focus on. Myself and my writing partner got to thinking, what could we make that was mostly just me in my house?? Inspired by the old security camera footage of Elisa Lam (yes, we did this before the docuseries came out), I got to thinking about how compelling it was to watch security camera footage. Had anyone ever made a movie relying on it?

Soon we came up with the idea of an influencer moving into a new home and documenting her life. She goes missing. We tell her story with her own words and her own footage. An avid lover of both horror and true crime, I thought the mockumentary format provided the perfect way for us to tell this story.

Lexi explores the ever shrinking line between public persona and private life in this age of social media, as well as the dark side of our culture's true crime obsession. Let me not throw stones, as I love it more than the next person, but by definition it is exploitative: turning someone else's tragedy or misfortune into entertainment for the masses. (Not to mention a major money making endeavor). We as a culture love to build someone up and tear them down.

By speaking directly to you, the viewer, Lexi makes you an active participant in her story instead of a passive viewer. As you sit in judgement or simply allow yourself to be entertained by her undoing, you are no longer an innocent bystander, but a contributing factor to her ultimate fate.

We are proud to be a diverse writing team in just about every way: man/woman, black and latina/white, east coast/westcoast. It is my feature directorial debut.
