Learning to Survive: A Lesson in Student Homelessness
Centered in Las Vegas, Nevada, Learning to Survive is a feature-length documentary film that examines the challenges faced by more than 13,000 K-12 students who experience homelessness every year in Clark County School District. The film examines the trauma and impact of homelessness from the perspective of the children and families experiencing it, as well as that of Title I HOPE, the organization working to ensure that these students have access to the same educational opportunities as their housed peers. In addition to the stories of individuals who experienced homelessness as children and teens, the film contains interviews with educators, academic researchers, school administrators, and philanthropists who are fighting an uphill battle to minimize the rapidly growing impact of housing insecurity amongst Las Vegas families. By raising awareness around the issue of student homelessness, this evocative film contains valuable lessons and insights for educators and general audiences alike, regardless of whether or not they live in “Fabulous” Las Vegas.
