Damon Beirne is a queer filmmaker based in Brooklyn whose work explores the intersection of performance and community. He focuses on capturing a community's spirit for future generations.
Damon's award-winning 2024 short documentary, Lavender Outlaws, features artists in the queer country community. The film premiered at WickedQueer, and screened internationally at GAZE, AmericanaFest, and CineSlam.
Damon holds a BA in Film Editing from George Mason University. His recent work includes films such as See You Tomorrow, Finding Bernie, and Seeds. He is the Archive Director at MIX NYC, where we preserve the legacy of experimental queer cinema.
Damon is in post-production on his debut feature documentary, Notes on N.O.P.E., an invitation to the joy of Brooklyn's alternative drag community. The project has received support from FilmShop and the Center for Independent Documentary.
Lavender Outlaws began as a test in creative expression, making a film that no one asked for. After a decade of working as an editor and colorist in Brooklyn's independent queer film scene, I wanted a break from Brooklyn and to jump in the director's chair. I grabbed a small camera kit and went Nashville where some friends were putting on a show.
After a festival run in 2024 , I have been blown away by the responses and inspired to make more. Many people had no idea that Queer Country existed, and many people have messaged me afterwards about finding this film leading people to new music.
I'm going to continue making short films on this subject, to one day have a Lavender Outlaws Anthology.
