It’s 97 degrees, and Crafty just ran out of coffee somehow... another brisk morning on set in Hawai'i. Filmmaking is always a challenge, but it’s made much easier by growing up on O’ahu, a place filled with characters and lives deserving of the depth visual storytellers get to explore. Spending the past few years writing and directing short films about my home has allowed me to develop an understanding of the stories that I yearn to see among those that turned me into a filmmaker when I was 12. I remind myself of all of this as a production assistant arms themself for the onslaught of chickens waging war against our snack cart.
Making movies on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean can feel like an incredibly isolated process…until you look up and recognize the brilliant crew around you. On set, joy, heartache, and excitement play their own roles in the chaos that is filmmaking. Merging humor and horror is something I’ve always wanted to work with on screen and an unprepared director battling against time felt like the perfect place to explore this. Also, unrelated but could someone please poll our real crew to see how I did?
*Producer’s note— it took him three days to write this short film. This director’s statement took nine weeks.
