Lady Ayşe
Ayşe Kadın is a symbolic narrative that centers on the pathological and terrifying consequences of the pressure exerted by gender roles on individuals. This house, where power dynamics are determined by who holds the remote control, is also a simulation of a country. Engin is a married man who constantly feels a sense of failure in conforming to society’s definition of “masculinity” and struggles with an obsession to maintain his power. His inability to have children, his unemployment, and his repressed homosexual identity create a deep sense of emptiness and anger within him. He perceives his wife Ayşe’s economic independence and zest for life
as a threat because, within the patriarchal order, he can only sustain his existence by suppressing the woman. As Engin loses control over Ayşe, he begins to feel incomplete and powerless. This sense of inadequacy drives him, in a pathological manner, toward the compulsion to “reprove his masculinity.” In the film, Ayşe’s presence and voice become a reminder of a crime that echoes in Engin’s conscience, one he cannot suppress. For within the four walls of this house, a story of savagery, shrouded in silence, has unfolded.
