“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” This is a quote from world renown black activist and Muslim minister Malcom X. In this short quote Malcom reveals that achieving your goals is not only possible but it can come into fruition if you start working on achieving your goals today. Understanding this helps motivate me to work hard and take the steps in becoming a screenwriter & filmmaker.
My mission is to share the strengths and triumphs of black figures who paved a way for all of us, through entertainment and educational content that is creative, brave, honest, and truthful." My name is Brittany Denise and I'm an African American screenwriter and director. I got my first start of being an actor at three years old; acting in church plays written and directed by my grandmother. The passion for performing would soon follow me into adulthood as I continued acting in independent short films. The life of an actress requires thick skin and getting used to being told “no” countless times; until you hear yes. The rejection and absence of callbacks inspired me to have a burning desire to create my own seat at my own table. I started my production company TwelveTwentyThree Productions in honor of my grandmother Catherine Johnson. I soon developed a burning desire to write, produce and direct my own films of African American heroines who came before me and helped pave a way for me and many other women of color. One of the trailers I wrote and directed was a short biopic based on the life and legacy of La Mulatresse Solitude. She was the first female slave who led a revolution to free her people in the 1800s against the reinstatement of slavery in the Caribbean while 8 months pregnant.
Being that this was my first project I worked many odd jobs to financially back the film, I learned to cast my own talent and crew and I spent tireless nights reading and researching Solitude's life to tell her story in the most accurate way I can.
