Director Statement

LISTEN is an experimental project. I had to do it. The idea came after listening to a filmmaking podcast where the topic of discussion was the importance of sound and sound design in a film. Sound is not my strength, but I agree with this mindset 100%.

So I thought, how cool would it be to put viewers in a position to watch a film where what they see is not on the screen, but painted in their mind completely by the sound design alone. LISTEN was born!

Don't worry. The film is not completely in the dark. Did I succeed in my execution? I believe so. It has been viewed by many from all walks and almost every reaction was what I was aiming for. Am I pleased with the final edit? Yes. I love this story and how it ends. There is one thing I wish I could've nailed better, but there comes a point in production where you just have to work with what you have and accept it. Others won't know what you would've changed if you could anyway.

Hope you enjoy my short film LISTEN.

"If I don't write my stories they can't be shot. And if they aren't shot then people can't see them. And if people can't see them, then that would just be…sad." –Earl Martin
