Emma Penaz Eisner is an independent filmmaker and visual artist. She engages with enduring mythical, existential, and psychological themes, often using dream logic in her visual storytelling. Her short films, photographs, and moving image art have shown worldwide in art gallery exhibitions and extensively as official selections in international film festivals, including Cinequest Film & Creativity Festival (USA), Revelation Perth International Film Festival (Australia), Sidewalk Film Festival (USA), and Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival (UK). Earning recognition with over 20 juried awards, her work spans experimental filmmaking, live action combined with animation, digital and analogue photography, and stop motion animation. Originally from San Francisco, she now lives in Los Angeles, where she founded and runs Eyes//Pen Workshop, an independent multi-media production studio.
In the low light reaches of LA’s Scene music underground, using zero flash, I captured these images of evanescent youth and verve to explore how the profane is glorified. This series of chiaroscuro photographs reveals the subtextual holiness of performance alongside worship by fandom and seals the numinous undercurrent of rave counterculture into historical documentation.
