Luis Daniel Blandon is a Cuban-American photographer, videographer, and filmmaker born and based in Miami. He attended studies at the Prague Film School (PFS) in the Czech Republic and participated in the 21st edition of Cinemadamare.
Luis earned his A.A. from Miami Dade College in Electrical Engineering and a B.A.S. in Film, Television & Digital Production. He enjoyed success serving as a software designer before diving into the film industry. In his short time as a filmmaker, Luis has been a key part of producing both short films and features.
Last Night is a window into one of the most painful chapters of my life. The idea took form and was filmed within the span of 72 hours. The film began as a creative exercise, but quickly transformed into something far more profound and therapeutic.
The story centers on two characters: one representing the imagined loss of my wife, and the other embodying my own suicidal ideation, self-loathing, and hopelessness. At the time of principal photography, I was grappling with overwhelming turmoil and Last Night became an outlet for these unspoken struggles. However, the film took on even deeper meaning after my wife left me shortly after production. In a cruel twist of fate, the story I created to process my grief mirrored my real-life situation, amplifying the weight of my emotions.
The film languished, shelved because of the unbearable nature of revisiting that raw pain. Eventually, I realized the power of this piece lies not only in my personal catharsis, but in how it may resonate with anyone who has faced mental health issues, deep personal loss, or internal despair. Through the characters’ journey, I wanted to explore how grief doesn’t just take away something external, but can slowly erode one’s internal sense of self-worth, pushing them toward destructive thoughts.
Ultimately, Last Night is about finding a way through the darkness, no matter how impossible it may seem. It’s a reflection on how we cope with our lowest moments and, perhaps, an invitation to face them head-on.
I hope the film resonates with anyone who has felt consumed by their own inner demons, and through the shared experience of watching, that weight can be lifted.
