Kolaambi
Pattu Kappi Kada; listen to your favorite old/ revolutionary/classic songs played from a colossal collection of LP records, while sipping hot coffee. This is the life of an old couple, in an Agraharam portrayed by Renji Panicker and Rohini. The husband, portrayed by Renji Panicker, lives among fond memories and redundant leftovers of his once flourishing sound business. His wife, Rohini now supports them by serving coffee to the routine costumers. It was when he,as an young boy, was taken by his father to hear Mahatma Gandhi speak ,he truly fell in love with the Kolaambi (Loud Speakers). He had devoted his life to being the conduit that carried the voices of leaders, revolutionaries and musicians to the masses.
With a single stroke in July 2005,his loudspeakers were silenced forever. When the Government banned the use of Kolaambis , the only job he knew, loved, invested in and built up from nothing was no more. Left behind with a huge collection of worthless Kolaambees, the once friendly banks turned hostile. He retreats behind the walls of his house, opening his vast collection of old
music, accompanied by a cup of coffee, to his friendly customers.
Nithya, a young Installation artist, who comes to Kochi to scout around for a subject for her Art Installation, meets the couple by accident. She is instantly drawn to the tragic nature of the Kolaambi’s fate and uses it to create a work of art at the Kochi Biennale. Her art work gives back the silenced Kolaambis their voice. As the guests pause in front of each Kolaambi they hear the voice and the message or song of the person that first spoke through that particular Kolaambi – thereby taking the listener back in time through the installation.

Kolambi is all about sound, it is the story of an old soundman and how he is not able to reconcile himself with the fact that the Kolambi [the horn | loudspeaker] is no more legally allowed and how he, somehow, gets frozen in time. However, Kolambi is not just a story about this soundman; it is about being silenced in a place where you are identified as a soundman. It is about identity at a time when the identity of a person, so crucial in today’s times, is dependent on some papers. However, you realize that more than papers, it is your identity in a particular cultural milieu that is really important.
Kolambi, for me, is all that.
