Kel Vance is a storyteller that writes with women at the heart. With a deep connection and passion to the art of storytelling and desire for her work to make a social impact in the world, Kel's focus has been on telling the untold stories of women in innovative and unique ways – both on stage and now on screen.
The chance to study her creative passion and write for performance came about after a career working in social welfare, discrimination and human rights. Kel now has a Graduate Certificate in Screenwriting, Graduate Diploma in Media Arts & Production, and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from UTS.
Since 2016, Kel’s short plays have been performed in festivals around the world, receiving both Judges and People’s Choice awards. In 2019, her first full-length play, “The Deal”, was shortlisted for the Silver Gull Play Award and made the second round of the Austin Film Festival Playwriting Competition. Also, in 2019, Kel’s short screenplay "Bespoke” was a quarterfinalist in both the PAGE International Screenwriting Competition and the Holly Shorts Screenplay Contest. In 2022, Kel’s second full-length play ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ was runner up for the Edythe Brook Cooper National Playwriting Competition. Also in 2022, Kel’s feature length screenplays ‘Within An Echo’ and ‘Wrong Shade of Blue’ were both Quarterfinalists in the Screencraft Feature Screenplay Competition. ‘Within An Echo’ was also a Semi-Finalist in the 1st Annual Female Driven Screenwriting Contest by Stage 32.
Over the past six years, Kel’s work has connected with audiences in both an intellectual and visceral way. Kel’s goal is to continue to centre women in her stories and create inclusive storytelling that is compelling and essential for all.
