Kel Vance is an autistic playwright and screenwriter who creates unique and innovative storytelling with women at the heart, exploring the often untold and unexplored, in uncommon ways.
Study of her passion, writing for performance, only occurred after a former career working in social welfare, discrimination and human rights. In addition to her initial degree in Social Welfare, she now holds a Graduate Certificate in Screenwriting, Graduate Diploma in Media Arts & Production & a Master of Arts in Creative Writing.
Since graduating in 2016, Kel's short plays have been performed in festivals around the world, receiving both Judges and People’s Choice awards. In 2019, her first full-length play, ‘The Deal’ was shortlisted for the Silver Gull Play Award, with, in 2022, Kel's second full length play ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ chosen as runner up for the Edythe Brook Cooper National Playwriting Competition. In 2022 & 2023 her short play ‘Homework’ in addition to being performed in five countries across seven cities, won the Mini Script category at the 2023 Scriptwriters & Co International Festival.
Kel's feature length screenplays, ‘Within An Echo’ and ‘Wrong Shade of Blue’ have since 2022, received a number of placings in a variety of competitions. Notably, ‘Wrong Shade of Blue’ as a Quarterfinalist in the 2023 Academy Nicholl Fellowships, as a Semi-finalist for the Stowe Story Labs/Tangerine Entertainment Fellowship, as well as a Semi-finalist in the WeScreenplay Diverse Voices Lab. Her Grounded Sci-Fi drama ‘Within An Echo’ notably paced as a Finalist in both the Big Break Screenwriting Competition and Stowe Story Labs/ Stacey A. Davis Law Firm Fellowship in 2024.
Over the past six years, Kel’s work has connected with audiences in both an intellectual and visceral way. Kel’s goal is to continue to centre women in her stories and create inclusive storytelling that is compelling and essential for all.
