Experiencing Interruptions?

Kassandra

Five girls born to French families of the African diaspora are confronted with a murder. On an uninhabited island near Marseille the girls battle to find the truth and escape back to civilisation. Power dynamics within the group are tested and their mascot, partially sighted, Kassandra, could be the only one who can divine the crime and lead them back to safety.

Director Statement

For this first film I wanted to make a project that would be a collaborative exercise with undiscovered talents from some of France's more marginalised youth. Please read about the backgrounds of our five actresses.

Kassandra - Bérénice was a child immigrant to France from Burkina Faso, adopted by a family in Marseille.
Faustine - From a single parent household in Marseille’s Northern suburbs, Elisa is a lifelong dedicated street performer and stage actress.
Widey - Oceehaze is an immigrant from Burkina Faso adopted at a young age by a French lady in Marseille.
Pigoise - Paula is the daughter of an immigrant from Congo. She lives with her mother in Belgium.
Soumeya - Soumeya plays herself in the film. She is a well known musician from Marseille. The child of immigrants from Algeria.

The girls workshopped the script with me for two months to help develop the dialogue in their own unique Marseillais vernacular. We shot with DOP Farhad Ghaderi from Canada and the rest of the crew were all local technicians.

This story comes out of many older stories and newspaper articles. Imagining how raw passion might go unfettered in the extra judicial space of an empty island.

Many kind thanks for watching, and sending all very best from all on the team that made Kassandra,

Ivar Wigan
