KITTY KELLY'S DIWALI
It’s Diwali night. The crowded neighbourhood is alight with fireworks and raucous DJ music parties.
Grumpy old complaint-box MRS. KANJI is fed up of the ruckus. Her paying guest ‘Good Indian Girl’ KITTY, as usual, puts Mrs. Kanji to sleep by lacing her milk with a sedative. Kitty likes to wait for her housemate KELLY, alone, in romantic silence.
Kelly is everything Kitty is not. Wild, blond, blue-eyed, American. A Bollywood back-up dancer who wants to get the lead part, even if it means she has to entice the lecherous choreographer Sawant.
Instead that night, Kelly returns from work, her tantalising dance costume drenched in blood, having killed Sawant. She was unable to go all the way with him, and he refused to listen to her ‘No’.
Kitty is shocked that Kelly could go to such lengths for an item song. Kelly is shocked at Kitty’s judgemental prudishness. Both feel betrayed by the other.
However, the doubt that Mrs. Kanji might have been woken up by their fight, pushes them into sheer panic. Kelly’s past is murky and she knows she must run once again, to escape arrest and deportation. Kitty can’t bear the idea of losing Kelly.
The two girls must find their way out of this mess, and perhaps find their way into each other’s arms, finally admitting their secret fantasies.
Perhaps the noise outside will come to their aid.

‘Kitty Kelly Ki Diwali’ is a short, independent film and Vivek's debut work as a writer and director.
The dark side of the human mind is usually locked away, behind a secret door. A door we never want to open. But sometimes, all it takes is a smile on a wrong day, to push you into hell.
I believe anyone, even a ‘Good Indian Girl’, if pushed, can plan a murder, can commit one. But the question is that even if you succeed, will you be able to escape? Won’t you be haunted for life?
The dark, dingy, ramshackle house, belonging to old, grumpy Mrs. Kanji reflect not only her life, but even the trapped lives of her paying guests, Kitty and Kelly, both running from their pasts, trying to find refuge in the city, in their jobs, in their ambitions. Their love and desire remain secret, always negotiable in the world of men. Where their ‘no’s are disregarded too often for their comfort and they’re persistently victimised by the male gaze. Each one a stranger to the other, in this dense, overpopulated city, completely misunderstood.
The absurdity of what we call reality is explored through dark, moody visuals and long takes, and the thrill of a crime story.
