KAARA... A CUSTOM

SYNOPSIS OF THE FILM

The film is inspired by a real incident that took place in Uttarakhand State of India in year 2005 and based on domestic violence and a local custom of Uttarakhand i.e.KAARA. As per the local custom, when husband and wife are no longer live in marital status or they dont want to continue as husband-wife and If wife wants to get remarry to someone else, the second husband has to pay the amount spent by the first husband on his marriage to first husband.
The amount so decided is called Kaara. The Kaara is decided in the Panchayat or in front of elderly people of the village and the decision taken by them is accepted to all the parties.
In this film also, Mona and Jamuna were married to each other for the last three years. but they were not in marital relationship. Mona used to beat his wife Jamuna every now and then. On one bad night, Mona evicts Jamuna from his house and shut the door on her face. Jamuna requests him to open the door but Mona doesn't. She goes to neighbouring houses for help but no one comes out. Then she takes the decision to leave Mona's house for once and all.
Mona, calls Panchayat against Pradhan ji blaming that he has given shelter to his wife and has kept her in his house. During the course of discussion in Panchayat, Jamuna comes at the Panchayat place and tells the truth to Panchayat. Knowing the facts, Sarpanch ji orders Mona to apologise from Pradhan ji and take his wife with due respect.
But Jamuna refuses to go with Mona and requests Panchayat to allow her to stay in the village and spend rest of her life in the village. Pradhan ji requests to everyone that if people have no objection, then he wants to take Jamuna to his house as his daughter. Everybody agrees and since then Jamuna starts living with Pradhan ji.
One fine day, Pandit ji goes to meet Pradhan ji at his house and tells him that how long will Jamuna stay at your house. We are becoming older day by day. If anything happens to us then who will take care off Jamuna. How will she spend rest of her life. Pradhan ji understands the situation and asks Pandit ji what to do further. Pandit ji suggests him to find a suitable match for Jamuna and secure her future by remarrying her under prevailing KAARA CUSTOM in the society.
Pandit ji knows a retired widower Army man of another village and puts the proposal of Jamuna before him. The Army man gives his consent and agrees to pay the amount of Kaara to the first husband of the lady.
On pre fixed date, the marriage rituals are being performed at the temple of the village. Mona, the husband of the lady couldn’t digest all this and reaches there to kill the Army man but seeing the broken glass bottle in the hands of Mona and guessing his intentions, comes in front of Army man (her new husband). The bottle hits Jamuna's stomach and she dies.
