Director Biography - Roman Volobuev

At the beginning of his journalistic career, Roman Volobuev worked in the investigation department of Obshchaya Gazeta, was a designer and a stringer photographer. At various times he worked as a film reviewer for the newspapers Izvestia and Vedomosti, Premiere, GQ magazines, and also published in the film studies magazines Art of Cinema and Seans.

From 2004 to 2012 - editor of the Afisha magazine. Took part in the writing of the film guide "500 Films That Changed the World", published in the series "Posters Guides". Together with critic Stanislav Zelvensky, in 2008-10, he wrote the Spoiler movie blog on the website of the publication, and then supported the collective blog Films and Festivals. The publications in "Afisha" and the author's film blog were marked with the "Elephant" award of the Guild of Film Experts and Film Critics of Russia, which Volobuev received in 2009 in the "Film Criticism" nomination.

From 2007 to 2008, Volobuev was the editor-in-chief of the Russian version of the Empire newsreel. In February 2012, he took up the position of Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Russian version of GQ magazine; as of 2013, he is not on the editorial staff of the publication.

In the 2010s, he announced himself as a television scriptwriter. Together with Mikhail Shprits, he wrote the script for the fantastic television series The Mediator (produced in 2013) based on Alexander Mirer's dilogy "House of the Wanderers", which was produced by Yusup Bakhshiev. Together with Elena Vanina, he wrote the script for the series "Tomorrow" at the request of the Dozhd TV channel. According to Volobuev, this is "a black comedy about the work of the fictional presidential administration in the fictional 2018." The pilot episode was filmed by Volobuev himself in 2013, but “the further fate of the project is vague,” since the customer had problems. In the winter of 2014, as a script doctor, he took part in the work on the Quest series, which producer Alexander Bondarev is preparing for the STS channel. He played small roles in the television series "A Short Course in a Happy Life" (2011), "Concerned, or Love is Evil" (2015), "Quest" (2015).

In the summer of 2013, he became a selector for the What The Film Moscow film festival, the concept of which was that viewers were not told which movie they were going to see there. He is a member of the council of the Tekstura festival of theater and cinema about the present. He calls Roger Ebert his favorite film critic.
