Rio Angelo is an 18 year old Queer Afro-Honduran Director and Writer who immigrated to the US at age 12. A month after graduating high school, Rio began production on their micro-budget self-produced short film ‘June 1st.’
As many black directors before me strived to do, I seek to explore the often neglected aspects of my community, while also bringing light to the lack of weight that queer voices hold in black spaces. I want my films to be an opportunity to bring myself and people like me into spaces which we have otherwise been barred from. Our generation is full of young artists fighting to be heard- and in a time in which intolerance only seems to grow, we hope that art and film can be the platforms for our protection, and for our expression.
‘June 1st’ is an intimate look into teenage self-discovery, and the frustration of immigrant children within inter-generational relationships. And an attempt for us as filmmakers to examine our own upbringings, and how art allowed us to survive.
