Director Statement

It took me a little over six months to write ‘Julie’. It was nerve wracking as this was my first attempt at writing and directing a live-action short narrative. I knew the visual direction I was
looking for almost immediately but it took me a lot longer to understand Julie herself. To think like she was thinking, to move like she moved, and to put myself in her shoes so to speak. She was timid yet bold, weak yet sharp, sane yet delusional, all at once. A hard character to build but a challenge I relished.

When I met Wendy (the protagonist) for the first time, I was unsure whether she would be able to pull off a character this strange. She did the meltdown scene during the casting and I
was blown away. I had found the perfect ‘Julie’. Several decisions were made for the camera language to accentuate Julie’s character. She is always, for example, alone in the frame, even when
she is speaking to someone. The only other character who might be in the same frame as her is the baby. This was to indicate her loneliness and drive home the fact that her world revolved around
the baby. All said and done, thanks to the amazing cast and crew, when I see the film today in its full, it’s everything I could have hoped for and has pushed me to start writing my next piece as soon as possible.
