My name is Jonathan Cardell Sims, and I was born in Darlington, South Carolina. Early life for me, I always had an inventive imagination. I would often immerse myself in novel play time alone. My family would tease me for "talking" to myself, but really, I was envisioning myself as different characters in movie roles that I developed as the days go by. I would play this game throughout my childhood and teens, and I still use this method approach today to write stories and scripts.
I first fell in love with the arts in 2008 when I moved to Charleston, South Carolina. I got a job as an Assistant Stage Manager for a local theatre company. I served as the ASM for three seasons. I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Theatre and I wrote my first stage play in 2015. I entered it into a writing competition and won--from that day on, I knew, I had an eye for storytelling. I got a job at a software company, and my writing came to a halt. From 2015 to 2019, I delved deeper into directing stage plays with my father, who passed away in 2020. I met my wife in 2015 and we got married in 2017. She's a neuroscientist and college professor. We have two children. A four year old daughter, and a son who passed away in 2020 three months before my father.
After my father passed, I needed an outlet. I developed an interest in screenwriting, but I didn't know how or where to start. I started writing my first screenplay, "Black Chef" in February 2021. In 3 months, I wrote 216 pages, and hated the story, so I started over. By April of 2022, I finished the draft that has now been selected in various festivals and writing competitions. Since then I've completed seven more scripts with many in the works.
