Benjamin Hegedus is a high school filmmaker and writer from Northern California, who began writing and creating short films in 2025. In addition to filmmaking, Benjamin is an active writer and film critic, running a growing substack titled The Film Critic.
“Jim” is my first ever short film. It began with a simple concept I couldn’t get out of my head: what if you could talk to Death itself? The project really bloomed from there as I ended up really building the story around both my personal experiences and my actors, as I was lucky enough to have two close friends who are twins and really great actors, so the story evolved around the idea of Jim looking like Tyler and mirroring his emotions.
The production of this film was extremely chaotic. I started writing it around the middle of May of 2025 in the midst of testing season as I finished my sophomore year. I ended up finishing the script and shot list in just a few weeks and had found a location, and it was ready for production. However, at this point I found out that my actors were going on a trip in just a few days, and by the time they came back I would be gone for the summer. We scrambled and were able to find one day that worked for filming, so this entire film was shot over the course of about 3 hours on a summer Saturday. The shoot and post production were filled with chaos, from construction in the background, to microphones dying, to the struggle to find a device to edit on. However, in the end I am super proud and grateful of everyone that helped me on this project, and I am really proud of how it turned out.
