Jamie & Jamie

In the surreal VR Game “Jamie & Jamie” participants are invited to reflect power relations in everyday life. In today's western culture topics around privileges and inequality are flourishing, especially in the art practices and its urgency to address is undeniable.
However the popularity of feminist topics, a notable observation shows that little research has been done about how men engage in feminism while a lot of studies have been published of women. Jamie & Jamie wants to open up this bridge to engage easily to understand nowadays structural inequalities we try to conquer in society.

As agender avatars, the participants are subjected to the perpetual tyranny of a ruthless washing machine. The challenge of the game is to turn their competition into collective victory over the machine's domination. During the experience, the player gets help from other living objects in the surreal laundry room who are also oppressed by the mean machine. Each experience is unique as they learn through conversation and action. The recognition of normalized bias conditions the game-changing momentum and facilitates the collective rewriting of those patterns. The virtual space is constructed in an eye-catching low-poly style with colorful shaders, bizarre characters, and striking lighting.

Director Statement

I’ve met Jamie (she/her) while I studied in New York. Her father, a businessman, decided to give all his daughters a gender-neutral name in order to have better chances pursuing a career in the business world. This story inspired me to name the game after Jamie.

The truth is that even Europe's most egalitarian countries struggle to put women on an even footing at work, in fact women still earn an average of $0.80 for every dollar earned by a man on a global scale. One of the many causes of this pay gap is unpaid labor, which is often referred to as “invisible work,” and includes essential household responsibilities like cleaning or child care. Unpaid domestic duties not only undermine women’s career opportunities, but the fact that mostly women are performing it also reinforces those socially constructed ideas about which traits and roles are associated with each gender.

My home country - Hungary has put up a new family policy in 2020 which reinforces conservative family models and therefore slows down all efforts for equal share of domestic and economic labor. None the less change needs time and I try to spark conversations of inequality on an accessible level to understand that success and effort do not go hand in hand if you have privileges.
