Director Statement

It is important for all queer stories to be told by queer filmmakers. That’s why it is important to us to make this relationship feel as accurate and as vulnerable as possible. The negative outlook on breakups is something that is relevant to many in our generation. With many fearing proper communication, we hope to show that not all relationships have to end in a way that leaves both people feeling broken and alone. The representational value of Jamais Vu is twofold. On one hand, Axel and Lia’s story represents an honest depiction of a queer relationship told by queer filmmakers, as we embrace the vulnerability of these characters and their failing relationship. On the other hand, Axel and Lia are universally relatable, as they’ve fallen prone to the pitfalls of poor communication and relationship struggles. Ultimately, we seek to tell a story that encourages vulnerability and honesty in people and their relationships.
