Director Biography - Arianna Usai

I was born in Sardinia, Italy, in the year 1997. My childhood memories belong to this beautiful island, surrounded by nature and the Mediterranean sea. A new chapter of my life started when I moved to Genova, North of Italy, where I experienced life in a city for the first time. Modernity and wilderness are two essential elements of my experience. I feel an intense melancholy about living in nature while residing in big cities, which are hectic and chaotic but full of life in their ways.

I discovered my passion for the arts at the early age of 12 years old. Photography and writing have been my escape to reality, the only way I could express my feelings with clarity. I always loved watching films and analyzing them in-depth with my friends, trying to catch the meaning behind each scene and the intense emotions they would transmit. I never thought that I could summarise all my passions into one career; a sixteen-year-old me watching films in front of the big screen was thinking that this world was impossible to reach, a dream too far from tangible life. When I was 19, I decided to move away and discover my path. It’s in London where I found it possible to follow my biggest dreams and become a filmmaker. After applying to different universities, I started a bachelor’s degree in Film Studies at the University of Greenwich. During the second year of my studies, I did the Erasmus exchange program in Hamburg at the HAW University of Applied Sciences to study Film Production. I finished my bachelor’s in 2020 and graduated with the highest grades. From there, I wanted to learn a third language and practice my Spanish, so I moved to Barcelona and started studying acting with the Chubbuck technique. Thanks to this course, I could develop the skill of communicating with actors and started my first collaboration as a director with the actors working in my film.

In the same year, I decided to write, produce and direct my first medium feature film Isolated Canvas. Since then, I have been working as an independent filmmaker to develop my craft.

Director Statement

I firmly believe that cinema should inspire audiences to search for strengths through their vulnerabilities. This film made me realize how important it is for artists to believe in our work and don't let fear or solitude become our weakness, but instead our most potent weapon. Isolated Canvas is my first medium feature, and it's also the starting point of a life dedicated to cinema. A type of cinema that promotes mental health and shows love stories outside the heterosexual spectrum. Films that will be inevitably personal, films that I lived and breathed through my mind, body, and soul. I have learned so much in the last year and a half, and even though there are mistakes related to the lack of budget and time, I believe that this film will make people relate to the story personally. What is very special about this work is also the idea behind making the soundtrack, which has been composed specifically for the film (apart from one song, Selfish Lover of Mild Orange, which they kindly allowed us to use for free).
Currently, alongside the distribution of this work, I'm working on writing the feature film of the same story where I take a closer look at the life of the protagonist and her lover. In this way, I can create in-depth the essential themes of mental health, drug addictions, and the issue of perfectionism exposed in the medium version of the film. In my deepest dreams, this work I'm sending for competitions has a future that won't stop here. After all, we constantly dream in a cinematic mode. And there is nothing more powerful that drives us than hope and passion in the world of the seventh art.
